Staff Picks: May 2019 Monthly Favorites

May was an incredible month.  There were so many amazing things happening.  Here are some of our favorites.

1. What a celebratory month for the Hmong people!

May 15, 2019 was Alaska's first Hmong-American Veterans Day. This was a long time coming with the efforts of many Hmong-Alaskans, including Pasert Lee. Read the story here.

Beginning May 14, 2020, Minnesota will officially recognize Hmong-Lao Veterans Memorial Day. This is a big win for the Hmong community not only in Minnesota but everywhere in the world. Read the story here.

2. The qeej is such a big part of our culture, and can be seen used at the three biggest ceremonies: funerals, weddings, and New Years. This video is a nice introduction into the making of the qeej. Watch it here.

3. We are loving the Hmong American Buzz podcast. Their interviews are engaging and informative, and we love the breadth and depth of people within our community. Go have a listen, and let us know what you think!

4. Yasmi released one of her new songs this year, and we can't get over it! Ali Chang's voice perfectly complements Yasmi's lower tone and the play on one of our commonly used phrases is brilliant!
